Baycrest Terraces Renovations

Construction of the beautiful, new donor-funded Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness is complete!

The spacious new facility is the site of activity rooms, Stan’s Gym, the Lou & Wendy Myles Open Theatre, and programs for Terraces residents. It also brings in the community for wellness programs and integrated research to prevent cognitive decline.

Under the direction of Dr. Howard Chertkow, Baycrest’s Chair in Cognitive Neurology and Innovation and Senior Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute, and Dr. Nicole Anderson, Associate Scientific Director, the centre is where scientific research converges with evidence-based treatments and strategies.

These strategies will integrate brain health workshops, physical fitness, nutrition, sensory and cognitive training, arts programs, and social engagement for older adults. The team will create personalized brain health prescriptions to help older adults live longer and live healthily.

The Kimel Centre is the flagship of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging’s CAN-THUMBS UP study, a game-changer for preventing age-related dementia.

Baycrest is grateful for the generosity, vision and support of donors and everyone who attended Baycrest’s centennial gala, paving the way for the grand opening.

We have transformed our Baycrest Terraces retirement residence into a state-of-the-art facility with upgrades that support our residents to thrive in the setting of their choice.

Residents and visitors enter the building through a stunning new lobby space. The individual independent living floors feature inviting new seating areas where families and residents can socialize, the ground floor includes our new Dorothy’s Salon and an impressive aquatic centre is close to completion.

They are also enjoying their newly renovated dining room and assembly hall, which features state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.

Previous renovations created two separate kitchens, allowing for the complete separation of kosher meat and dairy meal preparation, expanding menu options for Terraces residents.

In early 2022, residents began attending arts programs and other activities in our newly renovated spaces on the ground floor.

Baycrest Terraces renovations accommodate the current and future needs of residents, as we have designated three floors to provide assisted living and memory care support.

Two new assisted living floors provide enhanced care and support to residents based on their individual needs. Another floor is dedicated to a new memory care residence, which utilizes the Possibilities by Baycrest™ memory care model. This transformational model of care provides individualized support plans for residents living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia.

The space features new dining, living and activity areas, an outdoor terrace and 15 private suites with kitchenettes. Suites are equipped with fall detection technology and Alexa-enabled screens that allow residents to connect easily with family and friends. Residents also have access to technologies such as Tovertafel, a gaming console for people with cognitive challenges, and TrueLoo, a smart toilet seat that passively gathers multiple wellness signs for residents.

Staff are trained to help residents realize their potential and go beyond, to achieve more than they imagined would be possible.
